Seth Keysor from Arrowhead Pride returns to talk Alex Smith and the moves he would make if he was the Chiefs GM.

The offseason is a time for all of us to take a look at what we would do if we were making the choices as the general manager of the team. For me it’s pretty clear for most of the moves but there will be a difficult one here and there. The Kansas City Chiefs could really use some extra cap space to be able to build around Patrick Mahomes.

My first move would be to trade Alex Smith. The question everyone will ask is what will they get for him and I don’t have a good answer for that. Unfortunately for the time being there are other things that will determine his market in the next month or so. If Kirk Cousins gets franchised or traded then the market really opens up. Regardless of what they Chiefs may get for him he will free up close to 17 million in cap space.

Releasing Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali will open up another $15 to $16 million. Both are gone on their current contracts. I’d also probably release Darrelle Revis and free up his $10 million for the 2018 season. He will get paid somewhere but I think the Chiefs would be better served going younger at CB.

The most unpopular move I’d make is I’d release Dee Ford. assuming he passes his physical when the new league year starts. To me, he isn’t healthy enough to risk the $9 million he’s owed, and he hasn’t shown the effectiveness from the side opposite of Houston. All of those moves would give the Chiefs $35 million in cap space which is plenty to make moves.
