Every coach is now wanting to take the high road when it comes to falling on the sword of who called plays for the Kansas City Chiefs during their playoff meltdown.

Someone isn’t telling the truth. Better yet, or more accurately, someone is trying to take the blame for something that doesn’t apply to him.

Here’s what fans of the Kansas City Chiefs know for sure: their team lost in spectacular fashion, once again, in the first round of the NFL playoffs—this time, a 22-21 loss at home to the lackluster Tennessee Titans, a team they were beating 21-3 at halftime. In the second half, the Chiefs offense became a shell of its dominant self, marked by poor execution, silly mistakes and conservative calls.

When asked about the playcalling responsibilities for the Chiefs, head coach Andy Reid took the blame. When asked about the exact same subject, new Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy (former offensive coordinator for the Chiefs) fell on the same sword. When it comes to where to pin the responsibility or point the finger, that’s where the details get fuzzy.

Reid’s actual response, “He called the good ones and I called the bad ones. I will leave it at that. I don’t think that matters either way. That is really where I am at.” And now for Nagy:

It’s impossible to tell who to believe. Both men have plenty of job security at this point, so either one could be feeling pretty okay to take the hit on this. For Reid, it could be about letting his friend and colleague enjoy an exciting introduction with his new team. For Nagy, it could be about relieving some of the tension for the coach who’s taught him so much.

Next: Getting rid of Andy Reid is the wrong move

Either way, Chiefs Kingdom might have a hard time getting the truth.
