The Kansas City Chiefs have nominated starting quarterback Alex Smith a their entrant into the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award voting.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been honored by receiving his team’s nomination to be the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, per a press release from the team.

Every year, each team nominates a single player who stands out for his impact in the community, usually a long-term endeavor through a local charity. Alex Smith has been busy throughout his NFL career caring for foster children and making sure they have the resources they need to succeed as young adults by providing college scholarships and assistance for them through his own foundation.

Even more than that, Smith’s charitable work has shaped the lives of several foster youth in both California and the Kansas City area. Even more impressive is that Smith himself pays for all overhead expenses and administrative costs to run his foundations which allow for a vast majority of all donations to go straight to the cause without also having to provide for salaries or maintenance or communication.

You can read much more about Alex Smith’s charitable impact here at his nominee page. You can also find a complete list of nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award here.

Smith is likely in his final season with the Chiefs given that the team has drafted Patrick Mahomes, a young quarterback waiting in the wings. In his tenure in Kansas City, the Chiefs have a record of 47-26.
