Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Jake O’Connell was arrested on Saturday, per the Shawnee Dispatch.
The Shawnee (Kansas) Dispatch is reporting that former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Jake O’Connell was arrested early Saturday morning after reports of some sort of domestic disturbance reached local Shawnee police. The call was actually made by O’Connell’s father. Per the Dispatch:
"Recorded radio traffic indicates O’Connell’s father called police from inside the house to report that his son was yelling and breaking things upstairs, where his wife and two children were."
O’Connell was charged with a misdemeanor for criminal damage to property and his bond, per the Dispatch, was set at $1,500.
O’Connell was a late round choice made by former Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli in the 2009 NFL Draft as a seventh round pick. He beat the odds to not only make the team that fall, but Pioli kept him around for a full four seasons in Kansas City.
During his four-year NFL career, O’Connell started 8 games for the Chiefs but played in 35 total as a special teams performer and tight end option for Matt Cassel. He caught a total of 15 passes for 108 receiving yards, good for a middling career average of 7.8 yards per reception. O’Connell’s tenure with the Chiefs ended in 2012 after he was placed on injured reserve.
O’Connell did resurface for a very short preseason stint with the Chiefs rivals, the Denver Broncos, in the summer of 2013 when they signed O’Connell to compete in training camp. Unfortunately, he never made the roster and O’Connell has been out of the NFL ever since.
