The Kansas City Chiefs can fix their run defense without a major overhaul. The cure? Some different personnel packages and more trust in a few players.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ much-maligned run defense is best discussed in a “we’ve got good news and bad news” scenario. The bad news: the team’s defense definitely has problems. The defensive line has been manhandled too often, the linebackers seem to be beaten consistently and, especially on the ground, the Chiefs miss Eric Berry at safety.
The good news: the Chiefs are, more or less, beating themselves in the run game. This is good news because it means they can stop beating themselves with a few adjustments. The Chiefs voluntarily give up too many yards on first and second down. They spend too much time with two down linemen and Daniel Sorensen isn’t a linebacker, though he’s often used like one.
The Chiefs will have to do more trusting of their cornerbacks, but at least in first down scenarios, Kansas City must go heavier. They need tochallenge teams to beat them elsewhere. If they succeed, so be it.
Also on today’s show, alongside Charlie Karlen and Beards McFly, we start off by talking about our Halloween experiences before discussing Tamba Hali’s bizarre non-reintroduction to the Kansas City Chiefs. Then, the show diagnoses the troubles of the Chiefs run defense, discusses the remake of The Lion King, banters about Marcus Peters and Charlie makes a bold statement about the worst thing ever.
