Key #3: Play with a physical intensity

The past two weeks the Chiefs not only lost the game on the scoreboard they lost the battle of wills on the field. I don’t question the Chiefs effort or their desire to win. However, both of the past two games I’ve felt like the other team looked like they wanted it more. The Chiefs didn’t match the energy or physicality of their opponent. I went so far in my piece last week to call them a finesse team that played soft.

The Denver defense will bring that same physical intensity to the field, especially on a nationally televised stage. If the Chiefs don’t match that intensity they may find themselves in trouble for a third week in a row. The defense needs to get physical and hit somebody. They need to manhandle a sub par Denver offensive line. On offense they need to play way more physical at the point of attack. I’d argue that Kareem Hunt has been significantly more physical than any offensive lineman has been the past two weeks.

In fact, I think the fact that after dirty Mike Mitchell took a shot at Alex Smith’s knees the only offensive player that got after Mitchell was Smith himself tells you all you need to know about the line’s mentality the past two weeks. As an offensive lineman how do you not go after that guy after he does that to your quarterback?

What I can’t stomach is sitting there after a loss and feeling like the other team wanted it more and were willing to fight and claw where the Chiefs weren’t.

I can take giving up a play here or there, even the best teams make mistakes. I can even take a hard fought loss to a really good opponent where the two teams both left everything out on the field. What I can’t stomach is sitting there after a loss and feeling like the other team wanted it more and were willing to fight and claw where the Chiefs weren’t. That bothers me and I wholeheartedly feel like the Chiefs need to come out from the opening kick off and send a message that they aren’t going to let the Broncos come into Arrowhead and push them around. Frankly, if at some point a Chiefs player earns a personal foul while sending the Broncos a message that they aren’t just going to sit there and take it for a third week in a row, I’ll gladly give up the 15 yards.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you agree with these three keys to the game? Do you disagree with any of them? Are there others that you would have put ahead of them? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!!!!!
