Broncos vs. Chiefs: 3 key matchups to watch
By David Thomas
Justin Houston vs. Menelik Watson
This may be perhaps the juiciest matchup of the season for Houston. Watson has allowed the most sacks in the league (7). It’s a somewhat similar situation to Houston’s week 12 matchup back in 2016 against Ty Sambrailo. In 123 snaps Sambrailo had allowed 6 sacks and 20 total pressures. This year Watson in total has 175 snaps and allowed 7 sacks and 20 total pressures.
Houston is currently 5th in total pressures by 3-4 OLBs with 27 pressures and a pass rushing productivity grade of 11 by PFF (9th overall). Of Houston’s 27 pressures 26 of them have come from rushing on the left side of the defense (right side of the offense). Over the last 3 weeks, Houston is 2nd in the NFL only to Leonard Floyd in total pressures with 12 (including 2 sacks).
While the defense has been cold over the last two weeks it’s certainly not Houston’s fault. He has continued to play like the $100 million dollar man we paid him to be. Some have argued that he’s been used way too much in coverage, and I’m inclined to agree. He’s a deadly pass rusher and should get more than just 75.6% of his snaps to rush the passer. By my completely subjective calculations Houston should be more than prepared to have a productive day. I’m predicting 1.5 sacks and 1 FF.
