Why the Chiefs match up well with the Chargers
The Chargers shouldn’t be overlooked, but the Chiefs match up well with this division rival. How do we know? Look to a common enemy.
The Chargers are an easy team to write off. Bad luck paired with sloppy play and late-game mistakes rarely strikes fear into the hearts of a confident fanbase. But the Chargers are also a hard team to judge reasonably. All of their vices, the reasons that they’re 0-2, are also all of the reasons you have to consider them a threat, no matter who they play. With some better luck and fewer mistakes, the Chargers are probably 2-0 and enjoying the narrative currently delivered to the Denver Broncos. They deserve the respect of an NFL football team. But, good news: the Chiefs match up well with the newly-relocated Chargers.
Go back to week one. Trevor Siemian, C.J. Anderson, Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders beat the Chargers and looked pretty good doing it. On Sunday the Chiefs will have Alex Smith, Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Forgive the inexact comparisons, but that Broncos offense is essentially the Chiefs’ offense on a bad day. Add in a better offensive line and Andy Reid’s scheming, and it seems borderline impossible to see the Chiefs scoring less than 24 points on Sunday.
On the other side of the ball, Justin Houston is dominating, the defensive backfield is holding up well in Eric Berry’s absence, and the defensive line is ferocious. It’s hard not to feel good about how these teams stack up. But, in fairness to the Chargers, they’re always a few plays and some luck (good or bad) from taking the game exactly where it shouldn’t go.
