Daniel Sorensen and Eric Murray find a much bigger stage to showcase their skills with Eric Berry out for the season.
With Eric Berry out for the season, the Kansas City Chiefs are relying on Daniel Sorensen and second-year safety Eric Murray to step up in his absence. While Daniel Sorensen is the more commonly known name, Eric Murray will get many of Eric Berry’s old snaps. Sorensen is more of a hybrid linebacker safety with strong blitzing skills. Murray was a slot corner in college and will more than likely take more of the coverage snaps and some high safety snaps.
Of course, the Chiefs are going to ease him in and use Sorensen alongside Ron Parker more for now as they both played 100% of the defensive snaps against the Philadelphia Eagles. Whereas Murray only played on 69% of the snaps. The Chiefs like to play a lot of three safety sets so I expect them all three to be on the field majority of the time.
The two safeties each had six tackles on the day leading the Chiefs defense. I would easily say that both Murray and Sorensen had good games against the Eagles.
The fact that they each have some of Berry’s skill set means that between the two of them, I feel confident without Berry. Now don’t get me wrong, Berry is still a big loss, but I don’t see it being as big of a loss as if Marcus Peters or Justin Houston went down for the season.
I think that they will have Murray taking more of the deep and coverage snaps and have Sorensen play the more hybrid linebacker role while also taking some coverages. Of course, they will still move them around and do a little bit of everything to keep quarterbacks confused, but I think that they will stick to their strengths for the most part.
