Chiefs vs. Chargers: Mike Williams not expected to play
By Matt Conner
Mike Williams will suit up for the San Diego Chargers soon, but it won’t be this week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to enjoy the talents of their first round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, but that’s been their choice as they’ve forced quarterback Patrick Mahomes to sit out the season so far behind starter Alex Smith. The Los Angeles Chargers haven’t enjoyed the talents of their first round selection either, but that’s because injuries have kept wide receiver Mike Williams from being able to get on the field.
Fortunately for the Chargers, that will change soon enough since Williams was able to give it a go in practice this week. However, he’s not quite ready to take the field just yet since he’s still limited in practice. Despite being able to go through drills for the first time this season, Ricky Henne of the Chargers official site says Williams still has a ways to go before teams like the Chiefs have to plan around his presence.
"The Bolts’ first round pick participated in individual drills for the first time at the end of last week. Lynn said he expects Williams to do a little more in that area this week, but they will continue to take a slow and steady approach."
When healthy, Williams will most certainly be a valuable offensive asset for Phillip Rivers. The team already has a top tier receiver in Keenan Allen and a one-two punch at tight end in Hunter Henry and Antonio Gates. Tyrell Williams is an underappreciated wideout. Together with Williams, the San Diego offense should be difficult to slow.
