Alex Smith is being elevated by his weapons, and that’s a good thing
Alex Smith is the latest example of a quarterback poised to take the next step with some help from his next-level weapons.
From Tom Brady to Alex Smith to Andy Dalton, we tend to undervalue the impact of top-tier weapons to an NFL quarterback. Tom Brady went from legendary to unstoppable with Randy Moss. Andy Dalton has held onto a starting NFL quarterback job largely tanks to the presence of A.J. Green. Now, with Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce, it seems like Alex Smith is poised to take a step up.
This is in no way a slight to Alex Smith’s performance on Thursday. Again: everyone benefits from having better talent around them. So much so that I think it warrants more discussion than we’ve given it. But now, what’s next for Alex Smith? Where does this offense go from here?
