For the better part of the offseason, the talking heads have seemingly forgotten Kansas City’s 12-4 record and AFC West title in 2016. Instead, they’ve been enamored with their division rival the Oakland Raiders. The offseason didn’t produce an influx of talent for the Chiefs and they lost a trio of key players in Jamaal Charles, Jeremy Maclin and Dontari Poe. Sportswriters expect the Chiefs to come back down to earth. One quick way to quiet those whispers is to come away with a victory over New England.

It’s time for a coming out party in Kansas City. The Chiefs have knocked at the door the past few seasons. Either they prove they belong in the conversation or come to the realization they they’ve reached the ceiling of possibilities with Alex Smith at the helm. Patrick Mahomes will eventually succeed him one way or another. Though, it’s helpful to know what kind of firepower is necessary for becoming a conference superpower before then.
