The Secondary
Added: Terrance Mitchell
Gone: Steven Nelson
Roster Improved? No
I was originally going to break this into both cornerbacks and safeties but really the entire secondary remains basically unchanged. The recent loss of Steven Nelson to the IR (although he could return mid-season) hurts and is a loss compared to this time last year. However, the mid-season addition of Terrance Mitchell was a valuable one. His presence on the roster does give them a little boost over the depth chart at the beginning of last season.
The bottom line here is that the overall secondary (while good) has not been improved. The second corner spot across from Marcus Peters is still very much in question. If Mitchell is healthy and can play like he did late in last season, it will help tremendously. If not, the Chiefs will find their number two cornerback getting picked on relentlessly by good passing teams. The safety group remains one of the best in all of the NFL so it would have been hard to improve there.
The secondary needs someone to step up at cornerback opposite of Peters and the same was true 12 months ago.
Finally, the specialists and some closing thoughts.
