The Kansas City Chiefs have made room on the active roster for new OL Cameron Erving by releasing veteran OL Jah Reid.
Jah Reid was the expected roster casualty in some form after the Kansas City Chiefs acquired Cameron Erving via trade on Wednesday. Most fans were simply unsure whether or not the Chiefs would be able to carve any trade value out of the transaction first. The answer is apparently negative, as the Chiefs announced on Thursday that Reid had been released.
Reid first came to Kansas City in 2015 as a versatile lineman who can spell a starter for a stretch, and he’s proved valuable in relief at guard and tackle. Reid played in 22 games in Kansas City, starting 11 of them for the Chiefs, mostly in 2015. He started a single game last season for K.C.
Taking over as the versatile back-up lineman will be Cameron Erving, who will likely feature a lower floor in terms of immediate play given the negative reviews from analysts, fans and even the metrics at Pro Football Focus. However, the Chiefs are hoping that a change of scenery and scheme as well as a new coaching staff can help bring out the potential that made him a first round pick two years ago.
Reid originally signed a three-year, $10.2 million extension with the Chiefs at the tail end of the 2015 regular season, and the team will save nearly $2.7 million in cap space for this year after the release.
Reid should have no problem finding a new home soon enough, given his starting experience, the fact that he’s still young at 29-years-old, his versatility to play a few spots along the offensive front, and the fact that he possesses such an intimidating frame at 6’7, 327 lbs.
