Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict has been suspended five games by the NFL for his hit on Anthony Sherman in the team’s preseason game.

It might come as a huge shock to a lot of people that Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict has been disciplined by the NFL, but it’s been announced that the league has suspended him for five games for an illegal hit to Kansas City Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman. Burfict decided to immediately appeal the decision.

The Bengals and Chiefs faced off in the second preseason game for each team on August 19, a 30-12 road win for Kansas City. Here’s the hit from Burfict on Sherman.

Burfict has a long history of fines and suspensions from the NFL over the course of his five year playing career. He was suspended the first three games of last season for player safety violations in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers from the previous year. Burfict’s appeal could reduce the suspension by at least a game, a worthy cause considering that each game represents a significant portion of his salary. Burfict’s cap hit this season is $4.725 million.

In 11 games last year for the Bengals, Burfict had 101 total tackles, 2 interceptions, 8 passes defended, 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble. He’s a proven two-way playmaker at linebacker who unfortunately also has a penchant for being far too emotional and physical on the field.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, Sherman was not injured on the play.
