Joshua Brisco talks about the Chiefs’ potential defensive fragility and the breaking news of Spencer Ware’s season-ending injury diagnosis.

On this episode of Roughing the Kicker, a Kansas City Chiefs podcast, Joshua Brisco breaks down the news of Spencer Ware’s injury and discusses some issues that the Chiefs defense will likely face in 2017.

Kareem Hunt was always going to be a significant contributor in his rookie season, but this is a step beyond what the Chiefs were prepared for. Make no mistake about it—don’t let the Chiefs’ running back depth fool you—the loss of Spencer Ware is a major one for this Chiefs offense.

I loved Kareem Hunt coming into this season. I did one fantasy draft a week ago, and I took Hunt in the ninth round. I thought he would grow to be a major part of this offense. (An offense that I already had concerns about.) This is not how I wanted the Kareem Hunt experience to begin, and that’s not any sort of indictment on Hunt. I still fully expect him to be both the running back of the present and the future. This is about Spencer Ware.

Spencer Ware wasn’t just Kansas City’s best running back last season. He was one of the hottest names in the football world for those first several weeks of the season. He was the Chiefs’ best power back, he was extremely versatile out of the backfield, and he was an asset in pass protection.

Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. The loss of Spencer Ware is a major one for the Chiefs. Especially on an offense largely devoid of proven weapons and with a quarterback who needs the guys around him to make the plays.
