The Day After: Breaking down the Chiefs loss to the Seahawks
By Chris Taylor
In Conclusion
Well over 200 yards of penalties between the two teams. Neither team can be happy with that stat.
Alex Smith and the starting offense is exactly what they were last year as far as this game reflects. The starting defense, minus their two biggest stars in Justin Houston and Eric Berry, looks exactly like last season’s defense.
Patrick Mahomes struggled to make things happen. In all fairness, both he and Smith had to battle the influx of penalties. At the end of the day, both put up mediocre numbers. Neither looked like an NFL starter.
When players you have never heard of make your team look soft, it raises an eyebrow. Guys like Chris Carson, J.D. Mckissic, Tre Madden and Tanner McEvoy torched the Chiefs defense.
Players that helped themselves against Seattle include Marcus Kemp, Jehu Chesson, Ross Travis, and Gehrig Dieter. Kemp may not find himself catching many passes this season, but he sure looks like a natural on special teams. Chesson perhaps finally showed us what the Chiefs saw in him. He seems to have the tools to make the roster at some point in the season. Ross Travis looks as though he may push Gavin Escobar for that 3rd tight end spot. At the very least, he will force the coaching staff to consider taking four tight ends. Gehrig Dieter looks like he has the want to be a member of this team. He looked as though he was very comfortable out there, making a string of catches from Tyler Bray on the last offensive drive of the evening.
The game doesn’t count, but for some they have already packed their bags. For some, they have one more week to prove themselves before they find out their fate.
