For all of their veteran talent, the Kansas City Chiefs’ success in 2017 will depend upon the shoulders of their rising stars.
Four years ago, the front office of the Kansas City Chiefs was tasked with stewarding a talented core of veteran football players the Andy Reid-John Dorsey administration inherited from prior regimes. Today, some of those players still figure prominently into the here-and-now for the franchise while others have moved on to “greener” pastures. These days, the future of this football team hinges upon a group of players who are 25 and under.
It might surprise you to know that rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t one of the players I have in mind. Certainly, his training camp and preseason performances merit a level of excitement that perhaps this organization’s never seen at his position. Though, it’s not his future that heartens me. For now, Alex Smith is firmly entrenched as the starting signal caller. Mahomes’ contributions will wait for at least another calendar year.
