The San Francisco 49ers are taking a closer look at a former Chiefs top pick in defensive lineman Tyson Jackson.

Tyson Jackson’s career might have another chapter after all. The veteran defensive lineman who began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs had been waiting as a free agent for somewhere to call home for the 2017 season. The San Francisco 49ers might just give him that answer.

The 31-year-old lineman comes with Super Bowl experience after last year’s playoff run by Atlanta and could serve as a great mentor for younger players like Solomon Thomas on the 49ers defense. In addition, Jackson has always been a solid run defender even if he ended up more one-dimensional than his initial draft investment indicated. As the former No. 3 overall pick in the draft, Jackson has failed to live up to the initial hype, but an eight-year NFL career is nothing to easily dismiss.

Jackson played the last three years for the Falcons, who ended up remaking their defensive front in the last two years, including the addition of Dontari Poe this offseason. He started 35 games for the Falcons the last three years, including 7 last season during the team’s Super Bowl run. Jackson had 13 tackles and 2 passes defended last year for the Falcons.

If the Niners sign Jackson, it will be another former Chiefs lineman to serve as a veteran leader on their roster. Glenn Dorsey played for the Niners the last 3 seasons, another former Chiefs top pick.
