Mahomes’ preseason performance, Chiefs vs. Bengals takeaways
Patrick Mahomes dazzled in his second preseason game, and the Chiefs offense (with either quarterback) looks prone for a resurgent year.
On this episode of Roughing the Kicker, a Kansas City Chiefs podcast here on Arrowhead Addict, Joshua Brisco talks about Patrick Mahomes’ fantastic preseason performance, talks about the potential of the Chiefs offense (for either quarterback) and talks to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest.. Plus, what was encouraging or concerning from the second preseason game, what do you expect from Alex Smith this year, and what will Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce do in this offense? Brian Baldinger got into the conversation and had something to say about the Hill/Kelce combo.
If the Kelce/Hill combo is properly (even obviously) utilized, then the offense opens up in a huge way. Kelce and Hill are both matchup nightmares, especially in one-on-one situations. It’s completely ludicrous to assume that a defense is going to be able to properly cover both of those weapons at the same time. As one is covered, the other becomes even more dangerous. It will be up to Alex Smith (or probably-not-but-maybe-eventually Patrick Mahomes) to use those two guys to their fullest potential.
The defense also provides reasons for optimism. As Allen Bailey, Ramik Wilson, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Bennie Logan continue to thrive in the preseason, everything lines up for the run defense to take huge strides forward, which should let Justin Houston and Dee Ford loose in the pass rush.
But are the Chiefs true Super Bowl contenders this year? What does the future look like? All of that and much more on this episode of Roughing the Kicker, via (Almost) Entirely Sports.
