The Day After: Notes from the Chiefs vs Bengals
By Chris Taylor
4th Quarter
The final quarter showed that the Chiefs offensive line depth is not very deep. They allowed two sacks And commited two penalties for minus 16 yards.
Kpassagnoh continued to get into the backfield, disrupting the pocket until he finally took the quarterback down for a sack. Cinncinatti was unable to muster any offense, forced to punt the ball which pinned the Chiefs down inside the 5 yard line.
Welcome to the Charcandrick West show. Three straight rushes of 6, 27, and 25 yards reminded everyone he was still on the team as he finds himself fighting for a roster spot with the emergence of C.J. Spiller. The Chiefs would later turn the ball over on downs as Tyler Bray could not keep the drive alive.
Jeff Driskel took over for Cincy and was unable to get anything going,as well, especially after getting sacked by 5th round rookie linebacker Ukeme Eligwe, who enjoyed a solid game all-around.
Joel Stave came into the game to take snaps for the Chiefs as time wound down. His first snap went to West who burst downfield for a 50 yard run. My apologies for becoming vague toward the end of the game. Nothing else worth mentioning presented itself.
Final take
It’s pre-season, I know, but if what we’ve seen is any indication, the Chiefs should definitely be the favorites coming out of the AFC West in 2017. The offense is fluid and looks more in sync than it has the preceding years. The quarterbacks look great. The running backs also looked great. Play after play, the Chiefs made it look easy. The defense is as dangerous if not more than we thought it would be.
The competition all over the place is tight. Not many easy decisions coming in September. Players like Bausby and West are doing what they can to take someone else’s job.
Our draft picks look like we hit the jackpot in each round. Hunt might be starting before the bye week, and that’s not because Spencer Ware will lose it, but that Hunt will gain it. Kpassagnoh will be a monster as long as Bob Sutton can figure out where to put him and how to use him. The defensive line is loaded with talent.
One last thing to mention. Did you happen to notice the appearance of a positive and entertaining relationship between Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes on the sideline? All game long, the two could be seen talking to each other—laughing and smiling. The mood in Chiefs Kingdom is one of high expectations.
