Overall, I was very impressed with Witzmann’s performance in his first game as a starter. I was especially pleased with how he worked with the other linemen despite being the newest member of the starting unit. When going against more traditional defensive tackles like Earl Mitchell and the 49ers Chris Jones he did a really good job. It looked like he struggled more with overly athletic defenders like DeForest Buckner and Soloman Thomas. This may be something to watch as the preseason goes forward.

I think I said last week that if you had told me a month ago that Bryan Witzmann might be the opening day starter at left guard that I would have freaked out and had visions of Mike McGlynn running through my head. Witzmann was way better than that in his first game. I still believe that he has a chance to earn the starting spot, even when Ehinger comes back, if he can continue his good play. He just needs to be careful against the more athletic DTs. It will be interesting to see if he lines up against Geno Atkins next week when the Chiefs take on the Bengals.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you think Witzmann has a chance to win the starting job over a healthy Ehinger? Were you impressed with his play on Friday or did you even notice him (not noticing an offensive lineman can be a good thing)? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!
