Kansas City Chiefs film review: Bryan Witzmann vs. San Francisco 49ers

Third Drive:

Play 1 – Play action pass to Ware
Witzmann completely stonewalls Jones and Ware goes through the hole created untouched and eventually catches a wide open pass. Another good pocket for Bray.

Play 2 – Pass over the middle to Conley (weird fall/fumble)
Witzmann and Morse double team Jones who is a non factor.

Play 3 – Ware stuffed up the middle
Witzmann doubles Quinton Dial with Morse driving him out of the play, he then tries to slide off and pick up a linebacker but Anthony Sherman beats him to it. The run is stuffed by an unblocked linebacker coming from the other side.

Play 4 – Incomplete pass to Harris
The 49ers try to overload blitz Witzmann. Rueben Foster blitzes right at Witzmann and he picks him up and stops him. The other inside linebacker hesitates as Foster is stopped in front of him but then goes around and pressures Bray. While a guy did pressure Bray coming past Witzmann Bray was able to get the throw off because he picked up Foster. Not sure it was possible for him to pick up both linebackers on the designed blitz.

Play 5 – Bray pressured into incomplete pass on third down
This one was all on Witzmann. For the first time all game, he goes up against third overall pick Soloman Thomas. Thomas lined up outside of Witzmann and his initial move looked like he was going to cross him and go inside but after one step that direction Thomas goes back outside Witzmann who completely whiffs on the block, and Thomas chases Bray who throws incomplete. This was by far Witzmann’s worst snap of the game.

Things were looking like they were going to be all good once again right up until Witzmann’s final snap. That last play against Thomas was the one time all game where Witzmann was clearly at fault for a blown play. One play out of 19 isn’t too bad, but over the course of the game, that average would mean about three costly plays per game. So was this just one flukey bad play or a sign that Witzmann is going to have his occasional struggles if he is out there for an extended period?
