Opening Drive:

Play 1 – Long completion to Tyreek Hill
Witzmann gave some ground to DeForest Buckner but stayed in front of him and allowed Alex Smith to get the throw off.

Play 2 – Incomplete screen to Hill
Stays in front of Earl Mitchell (not a factor in play either way).

Play 3 – Dump off to Anthony Sherman
Stonewalled Mitchell and even got a little push to create a little more space for Sherman. Good play.

Play 4 – Smith scrambles for first down
Buckner tries to go around outside and Witzmann follows him. While Witzmann doesn’t do much to him, he does stay between the defender and Smith and this helps create the hole for Smith to scramble through.

Play 5 – Check down to Spencer Ware
Witzmann doubles down on Buckner with Mitch Morse. Buckner is a non-factor.

Play 6 – Incomplete pass to Demetrius Harris in end zone
Witzmann shoves Morse’s man to keep him off balance and then scans for others to pick up until Smith releases the ball.

Play 7 – Pass to Ware to set up first and goal
Started with a double on Morse’s guy but then slid over and helped push Eric Fisher’s man to the ground. Nice job of helping out with two different guys.

Play 8 – Ware touchdown run
Witzmann basically walled up his man. He didn’t create any real push at first but he didn’t give any ground or let his man get off him and get to Ware either (the run wasn’t to his side). As Jones tried to turn towards the run, Witzmann was able to shove him back. Ware ran between LDT and Mitchell Schwartz in large part because LDT drove his man out of the way.

Overall a very solid opening drive by Witzmann. On a couple of plays (1 and 4) it looked like he had his hands full with DeForest Buckner, but he did what he had to in order for Smith to make a play. Highlights on this drive for me included the dump off to Sherman where he got after Mitchell and the pass to Ware where he showed good awareness and helped out with both Morse and Fisher’s guys.

Now let’s look at his performance in the second drive after Tyler Bray took over at quarterback.
