The Buffalo Bills are a likely team to dive into the waiver wire for secondary help when roster cuts bring some decent talent along for free.
On Friday, the Buffalo Bills shook up the NFL world with their involvement in two trades. Not only did they trade wide receiver Sammy Watkins to the St. Louis Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines, but they also added wideout Jordan Matthews from the Eagles in exchange for defensive back Ronald Darby.
The aforementioned trades left the Bills with plenty more draft assets as they build for the future, but it leaves them thinner than ever before in the secondary. Yes, they drafted Tre’Davious White with the selection they received in the first round from the Kansas City Chiefs in the Patrick Mahomes deal, but they also lost cornerback Stephon Gilmore to the New England Patriots this offseason. They already had significant depth issues in the secondary overall, and the step down from Darby to Gaines is rather large, even if Darby had an off-year in 2016.
The Bills might have one of the worst overall depth charts at safety in the NFL, and the entire unit could use an upgrade. Fortunately for the Bills, some help is on the way if they wanted to peruse the waiver wire in upcoming weeks. That’s because teams like the Chiefs will be forced to cut several players to pare down to 53, making useful parts available for nothing if they can’t trade them beforehand.
The Bills will also enjoy a fresh set of eyes who will know the Chiefs roster inside and out since they hired Marvin Allen away from the team. New Bills general manager Brandon Beane hired Allen away from the Chiefs after he served the last four years as the team’s Director of College Scouting.
Here are a few options that could potentially be available for Buffalo (either now via trade or on the waiver wire if they can hope and wait).
