Matt Derrick joins the show to discuss training camp and the roster battles to watch on Friday night’s preseason opener.

The Kansas City Chiefs get ready to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night. With the first game of the preseason looming, there are a bunch of players who need to make statements early and often. Before we get into those players a quick primer. If you want an extra clue as to who the team thinks will make the team, watch the first couple of special teams units. They usually provide great insight into who could make the roster.

The biggest position battles will be at wide receiver and corner. Inside linebacker could also get interesting and C.J. Spiller is making it interesting at running back as well, but the bulk of the questions when it comes to this roster is how will wide receiver and cornerback shake out. There are as many as four guys playing for three wide receiver spots. There are probably four corners playing for between two and three spots as well.

In all reality the wide receiver group is probably three guys playing for two spots. Robinson and Chesson are likely locks which leaves Seantavius Jones, De’Anthony Thomas, and Albert Wilson fighting for two spots. Jones has had a great camp and is making a real push. If he can show ability on special teams as well as making plays in the games he could push one of the other guys off the roster. At cornerback the top two are set and probably the third is Terrence Mitchell. Kenneth Acker, Phillip Gaines, De’Vante Bausby and DJ White are fighting for at most three spots if the Chiefs keep six corners.
