Chiefs release first depth chart: 10 observations
By Austin Owen
Charcandrick West at No. 2
Running back is another position with a ton of competition. The fact with this group is that someone who deserves a spot on an NFL roster is going to find themselves without a job. West is currently number two behind last year’s starter Spencer Ware, ahead of rookie third round pick Kareem Hunt.
Andy Reid typically defers to veterans on his first depth chart of the season, and it’s what we see here. Kareem Hunt has had a very good camp. Barring injury, he will be your number two guy. The real battle here is between West and journeyman C.J. Spiller. Spiller has dealt with a rash of injuries throughout his career that have kept him from reaching his full potential. I don’t want to speak too soon, but it seems like Spiller may have finally gotten over the hump. He has shown good speed and agility out of the backfield so far in camp, but has been even more impressive in the passing game.
With a good preseason from Spiller, West could find himself on the outside looking in.
Ramik Wilson next to DJ
This is no surprise, really. Ramik Wilson took over after Derrick Johnson went down in December and did a fine job. Wilson got some good experience taking over that role a year ago, and he will be all the better for it. There are, however, a lot of young talented linebackers on this team. If one of them shines in the preseason and Wilson struggles, we could see a change here.
