The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly waived defensive tackle Montori Hughes on Friday, shortly after the addition of veteran run stuffer Roy Miller.

It was only a matter of time before the Kansas City Chiefs made a move along the defensive line. When the team first signed veteran defensive tackle Roy Miller this week, they made immediate room for him by releasing rookie free agent defensive back Jordan Sterns. However that still didn’t indicate how they were going to account for Miller’s presence along the defensive front given the glut of players contending for limited spots. On Friday, the Chiefs brought some clarity to the picture with the release of Montori Hughes.

Hughes entered the NFL as a fifth round pick of the Indianapolis Colts back in 2013 and played in 16 games over the course of two seasons in Indy. From there, he landed with the New York Giants for another two seasons, from 2015-16, and played another 9 games. The Giants released him partly through last season and he caught on with the Chiefs in January, after the end of the regular season, when John Dorsey signed him to a future/reserve contract.

As injuries take their toll, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a team desperate for depth along the defensive line add Hughes to their roster. For now, the Chiefs have too many players so something had to change. The addition of Miller along with Bennie Logan as free agent imports crowded the line given that homegrown products like Chris Jones, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Tanoh Kpassagnon were also around. In addition, Jarvis Jenkins and Ricky Ali’ifua are also in camp hoping to make the final roster.

Hughes will turn 27 in August.
