The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of important positional battles playing out in training camp, despite having one of the deepest rosters in the NFL.
Training camp is in full swing. For the football fan, it’s a welcome respite from the quiet of summer, when the dog days bring only midseason baseball, NBA transactions and Sundays with nothing to do. For the football player, it’s all about gainful employment. Ninety players come to camp for each NFL franchise hoping to secure of the final 53 spots, earning the sort of paycheck they’ve long dreamed of making. All of the workouts and drills and training come down to a few weeks where they put on pads and suit up for their moment in the spotlight.
For the Kansas City Chiefs, plenty of roster spots are already spoken for. In fact, on such a deep team, more roster spots might already be spoken for in Kansas City than in most cities, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some significant camp battles ahead. A deep roster means some special talent will end up on the waiver wire, and a cash strapped team (although not as much these days) could end up eschewing more expensive players for cheaper ones if a good opportunity presents itself.
We asked our staff writers for their take on various camp battles heading into the first full week. Here’s their take on everything from back-up quarterback and starting halfback to outside cornerback and kick returner.
