Chris Clark shares first-hand takes from training camp and takes a closer look at the Chiefs linebacker trade with the Seahawks.

The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off training camp for the 2017 season and 3,500 fans joined the team in St. Joseph for a quick and spirited practice. Camp kicked off with fans cheering most of the players as they came down the path. All of the Chiefs quarterbacks were reporting to camp together today until Alex Smith stopped to sign some autographs.

The Chiefs had several transactions on Friday. By far the most surprising was trading linebacker D.J. Alexander to the Seattle Seahawks for fellow linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis. For now this looks like the Chiefs giving away a Pro Bowl player for a guy that might not make the roster. As crazy as it sounds, Alexander wasn’t assured a spot on the final 53 either because he is solely a special teams player. If you aren’t able to contribute on offense or defense the team will look to upgrade your spot. Lucky for Kansas Citym they still have an ace in the hole in special teams coach Dave Toub.

Without players in pads, practice is just a little bit more than a walk through in a lot of ways. Offense and defense do go against each other but without hitting there is a lot of leeway. The crowd really enjoyed the multiple small QB competitions that the Chiefs put on as the rest of the team went through special teams drills. Travis Kelce even took part in both drills. He enjoyed showing off his arm, much to the delight of the Chiefs faithful. I will be back at camp Saturday and Sunday morning as well so be sure to look for more information coming soon.
