Former Kansas City Chiefs kicker Justin Medlock has found a home in the Canadian Football League. Check out this insane trick play from Friday night.

One decade ago, the Kansas City Chiefs thought they were locking up their special teams with the selection of heralded kicker Justin Medlock in the 2007 NFL Draft. Using any actual pick on a kicker is an odd proposition in the NFL, but Medlock came with a strong leg and serious numbers from his days at UCLA, including making 28 of 32 attempted field goals during his senior season. Hence the reason the Chiefs spent a fifth round pick to take Medlock and soon traded Lawrence Tynes to the New York Giants.

Unfortunately for K.C., Medlock’s career lasted one single game. One. Medlock missed a 30-yard attempt in his first-ever game with the Chiefs and was subsequently released. Dave Rayner tried to replace him and John Carney went on to replace him. It was a miserable year for special teams in K.C., but fortunately for Medlock, he’s not allowed that oddly short stint to keep him from playing football. And these days, he’s even making plays you never, ever see other kickers making.

Over the last decade, he’s bounced around the NFL and CFL, but he’s recently found a home with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (along with former Chiefs WR Weston Dressler). Last year, he was named the CFL’s Special Teams Player of the Year, while this season, he’s upping the stakes with a trick play like this.

As the rules go in the CFL, any player behind the kicker is allowed to pick up the ball and continue to run with it to the end zone to extend the play. Given that Mike Miller, the ultimate ball carrier after Medlock kicks it several yards, is behind him and forgotten along the sidelines, it led to the ultimate trick play.

While plays like this are frustrating to an opposing coach, it’s very fun for the fans to see such out-of-the-box thinking in terms of playcalling. For Justin Medlock, it’s also nice to see he’s doing well far away from one of the weirdest rookie seasons in Chiefs history.
