Patrick Mahomes’ replacement is also best quarterback ever
By Matt Conner
Reports are coming in from the Texas Tech Red Raiders offense for 2017 and it’s clear they churn out pro-ready quarterbacks like a vending machine.
Patrick Mahomes is supposed to be a game-changer.
The rarest of diamonds in the National Football League is a franchise quarterback. Some teams are willing to move mountains, or at least a mountain of draft picks, in order to get their man. Fan bases suffering through years of deplorable options are always glad to see a front office take a chance, even if it comes at a high price. There’s simply no substitute for a franchise QB.
The Chiefs paid the price this offseason, moving two first round picks and a third round choice in order to take Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech. He was the second quarterback taken after Mitchell Trubisky went No. 2 overall, and he’s going to take some time. But the hope is that Andy Reid and John Dorsey, then the team’s General Manager, had done their homework enough to figure out that Mahomes was truly something special.
However, it turns out that Mahomes is nothing special at all, at least not in Lubbock, Texas, a magical land of milk and honey where franchise quarterbacks grow like trees. Just ask this year’s players whether or not they’ll even miss Mahomes, who threw 93 touchdowns over the last 3 seasons, as they transition to a new starting quarterback in Nic Shimonek.
"“It is not different at all,” Red Raider wide out Keke Coutee said. “Nic went in when Pat went down and did great and with him coming in now it is going to be great as well.”"
There’s no difference between Patrick Mahomes and his untested back-up? Apparently not. In fact, the players even sound glad that the Chiefs did the Red Raiders a favor in removing Mahomes from the picture entirely. When asked for a pro comparison for Shimonek, Coutee said:
"“I say … maybe Brady. He stays in that pocket and he is going to make that throw and make that check down and I think it is a good thing,” Coutee said."
Clearly the NFL needs to take more trips to Lubbock, Texas rather than panicking every year. It’s likely that they even have an extra Aaron Rodgers or Matt Ryan just laying around on the bench if teams would only notice. And maybe the Chiefs don’t have anything special after all. Just another franchise quarterback.
