Patrick Mahomes is the only first round quarterback unsigned as of press time, now that the Chicago Bears have signed Mitchell Trubisky.
The Kansas City Chiefs still have some important work to do before the rookies report for training camp in a matter of days. Specifically, new General Manager Brett Veach needs to sign Patrick Mahomes to his rookie contract. He’s the only unsigned draft pick for the Chiefs as well as the lone unsigned quarterback from the first round now that the Chicago Bears have wrapped up Mitchell Trubisky on Wednesday.

Deshaun Watson reached agreement with the Houston Texans fairly quickly after the draft, which left Trubisky and Mahomes as the quarterbacks left unsigned. Other players still have yet to sign, including No. 3 pick Solomon Thomas of the San Francisco 49ers, No. 5 pick Corey Davis of the Tennessee Titans, No. 6 pick Jamal Adams of the New York Jets and No. 24 Gareon Conley of the Oakland Raiders.
Spotrac projects Mahomes’ contract to come in at 4-years, $16.4 million, a total that’s already preset thanks to the current collective bargaining agreement, which slots rookie contracts. Any hold-up in the process could be due to the firing of John Dorsey and the need to hire a new General Manager. It could also be a quibble about offset language in the contract, if the issue is on Mahomes’ side.
Mahomes isn’t projected to start for the Chiefs this year despite the team trading up into the top 10 to get him. Instead, he’s expected to sit behind Alex Smith and maybe even Tyler Bray as he adjusts to the pro level.
