The focus on Wednesday’s Locked on Chiefs episode is Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Dee Ford, who looks to turn the corner in 2017.

Other than quarterback Alex Smith, I’m not sure if there is a more polarizing player than linebacker Dee Ford on the Kansas City Chiefs. When you look at his production in the early part of the 2016 season there is a lot to be excited about. The question ultimately comes down to can he produce on the right side of the field in Tamba Hali’s place.

Justin Houston will regain his position of dominance on the left side of the Chiefs defense as he should. While Ford was productive from the left side in 2016 his production slipped once Houston returned from injury. Was this a case of Ford not being as effective against the premier tackles in the NFL? Or is it that he was injured in the second half of the season and didn’t have the same explosion?

Whichever side of the fence you may be on I think everyone can agree this is a make or break year for Dee Ford. Kansas City simply has to be better getting after the passer than they were most of last season. The best way to protect young corners is to get after the opposing quarterback. With the inexperience in KC’s secondary, Ford’s emergence as a force can be a huge key. Kansas City’s defense was the most effective when they had two good pass rushers and this year will be no different. The defense has the pieces to be very good this season. How good could depend on the guy coming off the ball from the QB’s blind side.
