Locked on Chiefs: Catching Up with Matt Derrick

Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest is back on Locked on Chiefs, as we take a closer look at training camp battles.

For Monday’s Locked on Chiefs, Matt Derrick from Chiefs Digest joins us to take a look at the battles that will heat up during training camp—which positions will we all be watching and what players have the most to prove as camp opens in a week. The Chiefs have had a very different off-season from years past and it is time to get ready for football.

The one thing that must be addressed between now and next Monday is that Brett Veach needs to get a deal done with first round pick Patrick Mahomes. With the new collective bargaining agreement, holdouts are things of the past. More than likely, this deal gets done on time without an issue. Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg, has a long history with the Chiefs, and there isn’t much to really iron out. Make no mistake though, Mahomes needs to be in camp on time.

We will be getting you ready for camp over the next couple days and will soon be ramping up to five days a week for in-season coverage. The Chiefs are going to be an exciting team to watch this season. Many camp battles loom even for a team that doesn’t have many holes. The Chiefs are headed into the season with high aspirations and a starting quarterback that is most likely headed into his last year in KC. How far the Chiefs go this season lies on the shoulders of Alex Smith, but the future of the Chiefs for the next decade will be slinging the ball all over the field in Saint Joseph starting next week.
