Former Kansas City Chiefs DL David Irving has been suspended for the first 4 games of the 2017 NFL season.
There are very few players that former Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey allowed to truly get away. Sure, guys like Rodney Hudson or Sean Smith changed teams in the offseason, moving on to bigger contracts on the open market. Such losses are a natural part of building an NFL team. However, when it comes to hidden gems, very few ever got away from Dorsey—except for David Irving.
Irving, now a member of the Dallas Cowboys, was a burgeoning talent who was truly coming into his own in Jerry’s world. Unfortunately for Irving, he will have to wait to see if he can truly break out in 2017 given the news of his recent suspension.

Irving originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 after wrapping up his career at Iowa State. The defensive lineman was stashed on the team’s practice squad, but the Dallas Cowboys liked him enough to sign him away from it in 2015, and as long as the Cowboys kept him on the active roster, there was nothing Dorsey could do about it.
Two years later, Irving looks like a nice find for the Cowboys. He played in 15 games last year and even started 2 of them. He had 17 total tackles to go with 5 passes defended, 4 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. That’s a nice effort in limited snaps and a sign that Irving could really blossom with regular playing time. Now such notions are all on hold.
