Why the Kansas City Chiefs fired the wrong man
By Britt Zank
Reid has been in Kansas City for four years, and all I hear is how great he is and he’s the greatest Chiefs coach since Hank Stram. Well, what has Reid won in Kansas City? He’s won one division title and one playoff game. He set the record for biggest playoff choke in history when they bombed in Indianapolis. They lost last year to a team who didn’t score a touchdown.
Reid is also an “offensive genius” who thinks it’s a better game plan to have Alex Smith throw 50 times while only giving Jamaal Charles ten carries. I won’t even go into his clock management or playcalling in the red zone, because everyone knows that. The tampering with Jeremy Maclin also ranks up there as one of the dumbest things I’ve seen a coach do off the field.
Reid is a certainly a very good coach, but he’s the Alex Smith of coaching. He’s above average and better than a lot of other coaches. Where the Chiefs were in 2013, he was a good hire to solidify the franchise and get fans back in the stands. But the only way he gets you to a Super Bowl is if everything else is so perfect that you can overcome him. The offense has to be so good that they can overcome his bad playcalling at times. It helps when a player like Hill and Kelce can turn five yard passes into 50 yard plays. You also need a defense that’s so good they can overcome Reid’s poor clock management. So when the team either needs a last-second stop or needs to get the ball back quickly they can do that.
Yes, you can win a Super Bowl with Reid in the same way you can with Smith, but it takes perfection to do it.
