The Chiefs have officially signed their second round selection, defensive Tanoh Kpassagnon, to his rookie deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs only have one player left to officially sign to a deal from their 2017 NFL Draft class now that second round pick Tanoh Kpassagnon is under contract. Word of Kpassagnon’s signing leaked on Tuesday night.

The Villanova product was a bit of a surprise in the second round for the Chiefs, but one look at the defensive end’s frame shows you most of what you need to know about why scouts and John Dorsey would love to see what he can do when coached at the professional level. At Villanova, Kpassagnon showed a nice learning curve and finished his final season at 21.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks after coming to the team as a raw product.

Kpassagnon’s deal was not made public yet, but given the slotted rookie salaries backed by the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, Spotrac puts Kpassagnon’s likely terms at a 4-year, $4.32 million contract.

For the Chiefs, Kpassagnon was an important addition at just the right time if he turns into the type of player he’s projected to be. John Dorsey himself used Sean Jones as a comparison, and Jones was a two-time Pro Bowler who finished his career north of 100 sacks. The Chiefs have Chris Jones under contract as well from last year’s second round and the duo could form the core of a ferocious line who can penetrate and shed as well as anyone. It’s also important for the Chiefs to get this year of development in Kpassagnon’s timeline because it’s possible that Bennie Logan and Allen Bailey could both be gone after this season, the latter if the Chiefs find his deal becoming a bit too expensive to keep him around.
