New England Patriots

This sounds ridiculous from the outset, yet there’s no way to make a list without including the Patriots. After all, there’s not a free agent around who wouldn’t at least need to think deeply about whether or not to sign up for a single season at Foxboro in the hopes of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy while Tom Brady is still Tom Brady. Bill Belichick is a genius and sometimes it feels good to sign up to play for the Empire, even if it feels a bit unfair to everyone else. That’s what happens when your team wins at an all-time level.

Why it might happen: Maclin wants to win. If you’ve been fired in the way that Maclin was fired, you might want to enact some revenge on them as well. The Chiefs are Maclin’s hometown team and was a big-ticket item only two offseasons ago. He recently invited and partied with much of the team, including head coach Andy Reid at his wedding, and chose to forgo an immediate honeymoon so he could join the team for, get this, voluntary OTAs (even though he already knows this playbook inside and out).

Why it might not happen: As much as the Patriots would likely want to add someone of Maclin’s talents, they simply don’t need him. Belichick already made his big move for a receiver when he traded for Brandin Cooks. He also recently Andrew Hawkins to compete with Danny Amendola for another wide receiver spot. Of course, this doesn’t include Julian Edelman or Chris Hogan or last year’s promising rookie Malcolm Mitchell.

Then again, somehow this will happen and we will all end up in anger management classes.
