The Kansas City Chiefs offense looks to the 2017 season to take a large step forward. Both new and old faces will have to step up in the coming season.

While the focus of the offseason has been on newly drafted quarterback of the future Patrick Mahomes, the change on the field in 2017 will be negligible. The more interesting battle is shaping up to be that of the backup.

To this point, Tyler Bray has been the number two quarterback in organized team activities. The question is how long will he remain there. Some analysts believe Bray offers experience within the offense and could serve as the more knowledgeable option should Alex Smith get injured. Others argue that the value of a first-round draft pick would be wasted if he were not able to take the field in a backup situation. The progression of the backup position will be one to watch during training camp.

One other position will be instrumental in helping to determine how well the starter is protected in 2017. Parker Ehinger has been active, though restricted, in OTAs as he recovers from a knee injury during his rookie season. For the Chiefs to be at their best by opening day, the team would like to see Ehinger recover fully and take back his starting role at left guard.

With a long-term signing of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, as well as both tackles and center being in position, this team may be able to field an intact 5-man unit that has experience playing together. That will be crucial for this team to progress beyond their playoff performance against the Steelers and push to make and AFC Championship or Super Bowl run.
