Former coach turned broadcaster Jon Gruden says he can see similarities between Brett Favre and Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ brass aren’t the only ones who love Patrick Mahomes’ potential. As general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid were high-fiving each other in the draft room when they selected Mahomes at No. 10, other teams were frustrated knowing their top quarterback was off the board. Former head coach and now NFL broadcaster Jon Gruden says he understands why the Chiefs made the move they did, since he sees a young Brett Favre in Mahomes.

Gruden spoke with Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star about Mahomes’ potential and said he’d have made the same decision that Dorsey made.

"“I haven’t said that very often, and that’s a comparison you don’t like to put on anybody,” Gruden said. “But we were there for the beginning of Favre and there are a lot of similarities in the way they play, the way they see the game and the way they throw the ball.”"

Remember that it took Favre some time before he was the Favre we now all remember. His first year in Atlanta was entirely forgettable, as head coach Jerry Glanville refused to let him play. Favre had 4 passing attempts his rookie year and two of those went for interceptions. Two years later, Favre would lead the NFL in interceptions with the Packers with 24 (and only 18 touchdowns).

Mahomes is now the No. 3 overall quarterback and it’s uncertain whether or not he will be elevated this season or whether the Chiefs will really go with Tyler Bray as their go-to if something goes wrong with starter Alex Smith.
