What if the Kansas City Chiefs had kept all of their original draft picks?

Round 4 (No. 132 overall)

Used or traded: Traded in package of picks to move up and select Toledo RB Kareem Hunt

Donnel Pumphrey, RB, San Diego State

Does this fit: At this point in our frivolous exercise, the Chiefs haven’t yet taken a running back, so this actually works out really well. Pumphrey would be fun to root for, a mighty mouse of sorts who has always played bigger than his diminutive size (5-8, 176). This Darren Sproles clone would have likely carved out a nice niche in Andy Reid’s offense and helped create some mismatches on the field at the same time as Tyreek Hill. Pumphrey would also help in the kick return category as the Chiefs have lost Knile Davis to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tyreek Hill will take on more of a steady offensive presence (and away from special teams).

Other picks available that make sense for the Chiefs: If the Chiefs hadn’t already grabbed Beatheard, Josh Dobbs went just a few spots after this and would have been a nice QB grab for K.C. The Chiefs traded up seven spots later than this to get Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan.

Round 5 (No. 170 overall)

Used or traded: Traded in package of picks to move up and select WR Jehu Chesson

Rodney Adams, WR, South Florida

Does this fit: A return candidate along with Pumphrey, Rodney Adams would give special teams coach Dave Toub another nice weapon to work with. The Chiefs moved up in the draft to get a wide receiver in Jehu Chesson, but Chesson profiles as a more athletic and all around player than the lean Adams who is not as impressive all the way around. Has better receiving stats than Chesson, so the production has been there. Just not a great fit here at this point compared with other options.

Other picks available that make sense for the Chiefs: Quarterback Nathan Peterman was sitting there waiting until the very next pick. If the Chiefs weren’t going to take a first round quarterback in this draft, it’s best to take a couple flyers on younger players. Perhaps grab both Peterman, out of Pitt, along with Beathard and hope for the best.
