The Kansas City Chiefs will be holding on to Brett Veach after all, as the Buffalo Bills have decided to go with Brandon Beane as their new GM.

Early on, Brett Veach was a rumored target for the Buffalo Bills general manager opening. Doug Whaley had been fired shortly after the 2017 NFL Draft, where interestingly enough the Chiefs had traded up with the Bills in the first round to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.  After Whaley’s firing, Veach was announced as a rumored candidate and the Chiefs were potentially preparing for the second front office loss in 2017.

Fortunately for the sake of turnover and avoiding too much loss, the Bills decided to hire former Carolina Panthers executive Brandon Beane.

The Indianapolis Colts already hired former Chiefs exec Chris Ballard earlier this offseason, and the loss of Veach as well, one of the team’s two Directors of Player Personnel, would have been tough to stomach. Despite early rumors, however, it’s uncertain whether Veach even got an initial interview in Buffalo. Beane was the first to interview twice, at least per information that was made public, and clearly the Bills liked what they saw.

The move strengthens the idea that new head coach Sean McDermott has significant sway in Buffalo given that he also comes from Carolina. The Panthers connection should make it easy for the new coach and GM to be in lockstep as they assemble a roster around their principles and schemes.
