Devine Redding, RB, 5-8, 201 lbs., Indiana

Stats: 253 carries, 1,122 rushing yards, 7 touchdowns in 2016

What he brings: Tevin Coleman and Jordan Howard have given Indiana a nice reputation boost as a haven for running backs and Devine Redding hopes to be next in line. The junior back left school early to enter the draft and found a home with the Chiefs. NFL Draft profile reads, “Garden variety zone-scheme runner who has the decisiveness and vision to operate in that offense, but lacks the explosiveness, size and play strength to make a living as an NFL starter.”

Where he fits: The scouting reports weren’t hot on Redding coming out of Indiana despite putting up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, but clearly the Chiefs see something in Redding to cut both Darrin Reaves (injury settlement) and the newly claimed Kelvin Taylor. Spencer Ware, Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller seem like the obvious four backs to carry into the regular season at this point without much in the way of competition, but Redding could surprise or become a nice fit on special teams. Unfortunately Redding comes to the pros with zero experience as a returner, so he doesn’t add that dimension at all.
