Breaking down the 6 newest members of the Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
Emanuel Byrd, TE, 6-2, 239 lbs., Marshall
Stats: 26 catches, 242 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns
What he brings: Byrd has nice size and touts his own versatility (he’s compared himself to Jordan Reed in an interview before), saying he can line up as a tight end or h-back. Despite the lack of eye-popping stats, clearly the Chiefs coaches see Byrd’s skill set as a potential playmaker. Perhaps there’s some strong special teams experience/fit here.
Where he fits: Special teams is going to have to do the trick on this one because the Chiefs are already neck-deep in tight end prospects even without drafting one and having already traded away former fifth round pick James O’Shaughnessy to the New England Patriots. Ross Travis, Demetrius Harris and former Dallas Cowboy Gavin Escobar are already competing for TE2 and TE3 behind All-Pro Travis Kelce. Byrd faces an uphill climb, as all tryout players do, but it will be interesting to hear what Andy Reid might add to what the Chiefs like most about Byrd.
