Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback Alex Smith is already coaching up Patrick Mahomes, telling him to take an “all-in” approach as he develops.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been above board in their approach with Alex Smith as they’ve brought in Patrick Mahomes this offseason. John Dorsey appeared on Good Morning It’s Football on Monday and said the team continually communicated with Smith about their pick of Mahomes both before and after the fact, and they continue to show off a strong communication ethos when it comes to the quarterback situation. Now their starter is returning the favor.
Smith has reached out to Patrick Mahomes already, even as the rookie is just getting settled in Kansas City, to communicate on his own. Mahomes told reporters as rookie minicamp wrapped that Smith had already reached out to him with advice on his approach in the early going.
"He’s reached out and we’ve talked a little bit. He’s told me to be ‘all-in’, take in every single rep and be the best you can be at it. He’s a guy whose mind is always going, he’s always thinking about football, he’s a guy that I can really learn behind and he said he would teach me as we go.”"
The Chiefs employ one of the most intelligent and professional quarterbacks in the game right now in Smith, so if he’s all-in himself on helping bring Patrick Mahomes along, that’s the best situation for the entire organization. It will help accelerate Mahomes’ learning curve and even makes Smith look good as he might possibly vie for starting options in 2018 elsewhere in the NFL.
