Kansas City Chiefs running back Charcandrick West says the addition of Toledo RB Kareem Hunt is “exciting”.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a serious competition for reps at running back ahead with the addition of Toledo’s Kareem Hunt in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. With veterans Spencer Ware, C.J. Spiller and Charcandrick West also in place, there’s going to be limited opportunity for someone. Yet West has embraced the selection, calling it an “exciting” addition.
"“I can’t wait to meet him and show him the ropes,” West said. “That’s the thing about our running back room—football is a competition, but at the end of the day, one of us can’t win a football game. It’s going to take all of us to do it, and that’s the most exciting thing about having another good running back.”"
West is young himself at 25, so it’s interesting to hear him as the veteran’s voice, but it’s true given how young the Chiefs running back stable is at this point. After releasing Jamaal Charles, Spiller is the oldest of the bunch at 29-years-old but he’s also on the roster bubble until he shows that he’s got an old spark back — something general manager John Dorsey said he saw earlier this offseason.
Besides Spiller, West and Ware are both 25, Darren Reaves is 24 and Hunt is only 21. Moving forward with that young bunch could allow the Chiefs corps to grow together over time. West, Ware and Hunt, once he signs, will all be under contract together for two more seasons (and Hunt for much longer).
West had 88 rushes for 293 yards and 1 touchdown last year.
