Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star talks about the ramifications of the Kansas City Chiefs flurry of draft moves.

The quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the talk of the town but, if things go according to plan, he shouldn’t be a factor in 2017. If he practices well off the bat and develops relationships with some of the players on this roster, like Demarcus Robinson, fans may be screaming for him to get playing time earlier than expected. Expect Andy Reid to keep Mahomes on the sidelines until Reid deems him ready to command this offense.

Likewise, the rest of the draft class will be developmental players for the most part. The one lone exception who to get playing time early is running back Kareem Hunt. As Spencer Ware faded significantly down the stretch in 2016, Hunt could see early action that would preserve Ware. The team will need a greatly improved run game in the playoffs.

When it comes to Dee Ford, the team picked up his fifth-year option. However, that may not mean that his long-term future is in Kansas City. The pressure will mount for him to surpass his 2016 performance when he had a 10-sack season.

Finally, the Jamaal Charles situation. While it’s difficult to handle such a beloved player wearing another uniform, this is the nature of the NFL. The Chiefs released him because they were not confident in his future due to his injuries. If it is fully healed, Charles could be a factor in the AFC West… only for another team.
