With the 2017 NFL Draft class in place, John Dorsey looks to build upon his legacy with a franchise quarterback.

What a time to be alive, Chiefs Kingdom! The 2017 NFL Draft is over and Chiefs GM John Dorsey came away with a nice haul of six players, all with tons of raw athleticism and talent to tap into. I think we were all in the same boat when the rumors of Kansas City trading up into the top 10 began to circulate. It was exciting, and I was ready to leap out of my chair at work. I just knew Patrick Mahomes would be ours. A friend of mine took the other route and half jokingly, half seriously said that KC would take some sort of lineman.

Another buddy of mine was frantically texting me during the draft, he was wanting to believe but held doubts too. He asked if I still thought that the Chiefs would trade up. At this point in time, the Bills had just been announced on the clock. I told him if it was going to happen, it will be now.

I was in my car on my way home when the Bills logo changed to the arrowhead of Kansas City. My eyes were glued to my phone as I was dashing between Twitter and ESPN for anything I could get.

Then it happened. Patrick Mahomes was selected by the Chiefs. I was ecstatic, overjoyed. I just laughed with joy. One for the history books, boys!

The drafting of Mahomes and the others in Dorsey’s latest draft class means the man is thinking about the future. He is thinking long term with this team. Dorsey will not be going anywhere soon.

A draft of raw atheltic ability

The other selections made in the 2017 Draft are raw athletes. Not all of them will make the team and even less will be starters or contributors. But they are athletic and filled to the brim with potential waiting to be tapped into and refined. Tanoh Kpassagnon reminds me a lot of Chris Jones.

Many will describe Jones as a rising star. I prefer awakening beast. KPass has a lot of the same stuff to him. Now, it’ll be a year or two before we get to see him in action. Despite that, KPass and Jones could make for a deadly combination on the defensive line.

This is just one example of the kind of thing Dorsey was looking for in this draft. Coming into that Thursday night, Dorsey had his chance to draft his own version of Aaron Rodgers and make history. He did not waste his golden opportunity.

The Jamaal Charles situation

Now bear with me on this next one. The Jamaal Charles situation may come back to tarnish Dorsey’s reputation at some point. Charles left us for the hated Denver Broncos. The wording he used when he left made it sound it was personal.

I can’t really blame the guy. Imagine you were in his position. The team you had given years of your life to, spent much of your soul on, just up and lets you go. I can’t begin to imagine how that must feel.

There’s also the other side of this. Football is a business, there have to be emotionless business decisions made every year. This just happened to be an unfortunate one for a fan favorite and legend. The writing was on the wall. Charles wasn’t his usual self and then got his other knee hurt in the same way as the last one.

The hard choice had to be made. Kudos to Dorsey for being willing to make that call. At the end of the day, this move was inevitable and works out best for everyone. Charles can find a place to play, Kansas City can use the money and roster space saved to build for the future.

Dorsey’s legacy so far is one of hard work and diligence. Searching every possible avenue to find talent. Even in the late rounds, or the preseason castoffs. Added to this now is the willingness to be aggressive and take the risks to get who you want. It really says something when the NFL is going after the people under Dorsey to fill their front office personnel holes.

Here’s to you Mr. Dorsey. Whatever the future holds, I’m glad to have your hands on the wheel.

What do you think of Dorsey’s legacy right now, Chiefs Kingdom? Does the Charles situation hurt it some? Do you like the Mahomes pick? Let me know! Thanks for reading and Go Chiefs!
