2017 NFL mock draft: Trades aplenty in Round 1 in AA writer’s mock draft
By Matt Conner
Pick: 7
Team: Los Angeles Chargers
Selection: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
With the seventh overall pick, the Los Angles Chargers select O.J. Howard, a tight end out of Alabama. Why would the Chargers select Howard when they have
Hunter Henry, who caught 8 touchdowns last year, on their current roster? Well, the answer is simple. Howard is has huge upside potential, is big and fast, and is a match-up nightmare. He very well could be the next Antonio Gates.
Speaking of Gates, having both Howard and Henry learning from one of the best in the business has nothing but positive results. The Chargers also have something special with running back Melvin Gordon and the addition on two tight ends sets can really add another dimension to a run game they want to utilize.
Quarterback Phillip Rivers loves to throw to his tight ends, 111 times to be exact. Rivers is a gunslinger and another target for the new L.A. Chargers could be a very good thing. The reality is they will more than likely look defense with their first pick, but they can do no wrong in selecting the Bama star to give their offense even more firepower. [Nick Floyd]
